Patient Information: Consent – Your Choice

Why we ask for your consent. Before any examination, test, or treatment, we will ask for your consent. Consent means: You have been given clear information. You understand your options. You agree to go ahead. It is always your decision. You can say no or change your mind at any time, including during a procedure.

What information will I be given? We will explain: What the procedure or treatment involves. The benefits and purpose. Any risks or side effects that may matter to you. Alternative options, including doing nothing.

What may happen if you decide not to proceed? We will tailor this information to you, so please tell us what matters most.

Do I have to decide straight away? No. You can: Take time to think. Ask for more information. Talk to family, friends, or someone you trust. If you need support (for example, an interpreter), we can arrange this.

Asking questions Please ask anything you want. You might ask: What are my options? What are the risks and benefits? What happens if I wait or do nothing? How will this affect me? We will answer your questions as clearly as possible.

Your choices about contraception (LARC services)

If you are having a contraceptive procedure (such as an implant or coil), we will: Discuss suitable contraceptive options. Explain how effective they are Explain risks and possible side effects. Explain what the procedure involves. You can choose, delay, or decline any treatment. We will also check that you feel able to make this decision freely.

Who will be involved in my care? Your care may be provided by a team of trained professionals. Staff in training may be involved but will always be supervised.

How your information is used? Your information will be: Stored securely. Shared with your GP where needed for your care with your consent. We follow NHS confidentiality and data protection rules.

Can I change my mind? You can withdraw your consent at any time.

If you change your mind: Tell a member of staff. We will explain any implications and next steps.
